5 Tips to Decrease Utility Bills

Improve the efficiency of your home.

With the weather getting worse and worse, it isn't surprising that you have gone looking for ways to improve the efficiency of your home. Below we have listed 5 incredible tips which will keep you warmer, and happier, this Christmas.

1 - Seal the draughts in your home. Quick!

If you have cold draughts of air entering your home, you won't get the full effect of your heating system. Oftentimes your windows or doors can be poorly fitted, leaving cracks through which air can flow. On a cold windy day, attempt to find these cracks. You can do this by pure initiative, or by using a candle. Light the candle, and move it around a window or door. Watch the flame, and use the flame's reaction as guide to find the draughts.

Once you find the draught you can seal it using silicon or foam. Removing draughts from your home will make an immeasurably difference.

2 - Seal external holes.

If you have pipes or wires running from the interior of your home to the exterior of your home, it is unlikely that the hole in which it runs through has been sealed correctly. This can be a severe loss of heat. For example, if your kitchen sink sits against an exterior wall, the pipes beneath your sink probably run straight out. Check these pipes, and make sure you aren't losing a lot of heat through this hole.

3 - Adjust door thresholds.

Make sure your door is as tight to the threshold as possible. If it isn't tight, air can seep in and out. This is not a complicated procedure, but it can make a great difference to the loss of heat in your home. If you need some help on how to do this, you can watch a video here.

4 - Make use of curtains!

Using curtains correctly can make a huge difference to your home. If you have old windows in your home, chances are sealing the draughts won't help you much. We recommend buying big, heavy, curtains. Curtains can make a world of difference to your home. They aren't a permanent solution, but they do help!

5 - Improve your insulation.

This is an obvious one, right? If your home is fitted with cellulose or fiberglass insulation, you are probably losing way more heat than you need to. Spray foam insulation and external insulation are much better alternatives.

External Insulation

As of late we have noticed an increase in the demand for external insulation. As you would presume, external insulation is fitted to the outside of your house, instead of the inside. It is also much more efficient. Once it is installed the external wall insulation can be decorated to create a façade which matches the rest of your home. Oftentimes the whole installation will go unnoticed from the outside. Until you notice the decrease in utility bills, that is.

external insulation ireland

External insulation prevents any heat escaping from the walls of your house. This results in a vast decrease in utility bills, as well as a much warmer home. But, why the sudden increase in demand?

Firstly, the SEAI offers up to €4500 towards insulation for your home. The key words to notice are "up to". There are many grants on offer, but only one is valued at €4500. Can you guess which grant that is?

Secondly, we are one of the SEAI approved contractors, which means any external insulation installed by our professional contractors is eligible for this grant.

External insulation is so efficient that the SEAI are willing to offer €4500 worth of encouragement.

If however, external insulation does not fit your needs, we also provide spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation is much more versatile in comparison to external wall insulation. It can be applied to smaller, harder to reach areas. It is also far more suited to attics.

What is Spray Foam Insulation?

There are a lot of misconceptions about spray foam insulation - but what is spray foam insulation?

We will cover the basics of spray foam insulation in an effort to give you a better understanding of it and explain why it is the best insulation for you.

Spray foam insulation has a higher R-value than other commercially available forms of insulation. For example, our closed cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of approximately R-6.5, whereas fiberglass has an R-value of anywhere between R-2.2 and R-4.3.

An R-value is a measure of resistance to the flow of heat. The higher an R-value is, the more it resists the flow of heat. This makes it a better form of insulation.

If you would like to learn more about R-values, you can find our comprehensive explanation here

Spray foam insulation expands to fit the environment, which ensures there is an airtight seal. This airtight seal is what makes spray foam insulation a much better alternative to conventional forms of insulation.

There are two types of spray foam insulation. Open cell, and closed cell.

As the name would suggest, open cell spray foam insulation has open pores within the foam. It is softer to the touch, and is great at dampening sound. Closed cell spray foam insulation is much harder, but is impermeable to moisture.

You can read our comprehensive comparison between open and closed cell spray foam insulation here.

Conventional forms of insulation such as fiberglass and cellulose insulation do not guarantee an airtight seal. They are also easily damage by moisture.

We recommend spray foam insulation as it pays for itself in no time. You can find a full list of benefits here.

If you are unsure whether Spray Foam Insulation is the right choice for your home, we have a clear and concise list of benefits available here, and an explanation of R-Values available here. The article explaining R-Values explains why fiberglass and cellulose insulation is becoming obsolete, and why spray foam is experiencing a surge in popularity!

R-Values Explained

R-Values Explained.

R-Value is often mentioned alongside insulation, and rightly so. But what is it?

Well, the official definition is as follows;

A measure of resistance to the flow of heat through a given thickness of a material (such as insulation) with higher numbers indicating better insulating properties.

If you’re still lost, don’t worry. It’s a strange concept.

Heat is a form of energy, and energy does not like to stay in the same place for too long. When air heats up, it tends to rise upwards. As warm air rises in your home it encounters several barriers. Your ceilings, floors and roof for example. Heat easily passes through these barriers, as they pose no resistance to the movement of the heat. This directly correlates to a low R-Value.

clipart of thermometer

The insulation in your home acts as a barrier to this movement of heat. It makes an effort to prohibit the movement and loss of heat. This table below, taken from www.todayshomeowner.com displays R-Values for different types of insulation.

Insulation Type:

R-Value per Inch:

Fiberglass (loose)

2.2 – 2.9

Fiberglass (batts)

2.9 – 3.8

Cellulose (loose)

3.1 – 3.8

Stone Wool (loose)

2.2 – 3.3

Stone Wool (batts)

3.3 – 4.2

Cotton (batts)

3.0 – 3.7

Cementitious (foam)

2.0 – 3.9

Polyicynene (foam)

3.6 – 4.3

Phenolic (foam)

4.4 – 8.2

Polyisocyanurate (foam)

5.6 – 8.0

Polyurethane (foam)

5.6 – 8.0

The most common forms of insulation used domestically are fiberglass and cellulose. As you can see, these forms of insulation are nowhere near as good as Polyurethane Foam.

Spray foam insulation provides an entirely airtight seal which minimises heat loss. It also adds structural strength and integrity and can act as a sound barrier, resulting in a more peaceful home. You can find a full list of benefits here.

If you would like to find out more about spray foam insulation or get a free quotation you can email us at info@myfoam.ie, freephone 1800 911500 or fill out a contact form on our home page.

Open-Cell and Closed-Cell – What’s the Difference?

Spray foam is formed by a reaction between two chemicals. They are commonly known as MDI and pMDI. These chemicals come in separate barrels or drums. Once they are introduced to each other they react to form a highly insulative foam.

You can watch this reaction take place here.

spray foam closed cell open cell

There are two types of spray foam. Closed cell and open cell. With open-cell spray foam the cells are not closed, as the name would suggest. This creates a softer, weaker spray foam. Air fills the tiny spaces in between the cells. Closed-cell spray foam is much stronger and has a higher R-value as the cells remain closed. Air is prohibited from entering the cells.

Although they share some properties, there are also differences. Closed-cell spray foam has a higher R-value, resists water and adds strength and rigidity. Open-cell spray foam is not suggested for applications in direct contact with water, is much softer and has a lower density. Due to the soft nature of open-cell foam, it is excellent at minimising sound transmission and can drastically reduce noise pollution.

Our highly trained and experienced team will provide professional assistance from the outset and throughout. We survey the structure, examine your needs and provide an elite service at a competitive price. We will recommend either Open-Cell or Closed-Cell spray foam depending on the structure, location and your needs.

At MyFoam we only use PurAcell approved products. These products have been tested and are approved by the National Standards Authority of Ireland. You can find our NSAI certification here. This certification guarantees excellence. We are extremely experienced in all applications of spray foam. We offer our service nationwide.

This certification also helps our customers attain grants from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
